What to put on a contractor invoice

• Your business name, phone and email — and your license number if your trade or state requires it on paperwork.
• The customer’s name and the job address (where the work was done, not just where the bill goes).
• An invoice number and date, plus a due date. “Due on receipt” or 14 days are the most common for small jobs.
• One line per piece of work or material, with quantity and price, so the customer can see what they are paying for.
• Tax, any deposit already paid, and the balance due — in bold, so nobody has to do math.
• How to pay: Zelle, check, card. The easier it is, the faster you get paid.

Get paid faster

• Send the invoice the same day the job is finished, while the work is fresh in the customer’s mind.
• Use the customer’s words in the line items (“Replace kitchen faucet”), not supply-house codes.
• Put the deposit on the invoice so the balance is obvious and there is no argument about what was paid.
• Give a card option. Many homeowners pay the same day when they can tap a link instead of finding a checkbook.
