How Contractors Get Paid Faster: 8 Habits That Work

Getting paid fast is mostly habits, not chasing. These are the ones that make the biggest difference for small crews.

Updated October 27, 2026 · Written for small contractors and trade crews

Habits that work

  1. Take a deposit on bigger jobs.
  2. Invoice the same day the job is done — from the job site if you can.
  3. Put a clear due date on every invoice (“due on receipt” for small jobs).
  4. Offer card payment with a link the customer can tap.
  5. Show deposits already paid so the balance is obvious.
  6. Write line items the customer understands.
  7. Send a friendly reminder the day after the due date.
  8. Keep everything in one place so nothing is forgotten.

How Selk helps

Every Selk invoice has a Pay Now link through your own Stripe account; when the customer pays, the invoice marks itself paid. Overdue invoices show on Home so you know who to remind.

Questions

Should I charge a fee for card payments?

Rules on card surcharges differ by state and by card network. Check before adding one, or include card costs in your prices.
